What you need to know about Diabetes

Diabetes has been called a number of names and from my country Ghana, Some call it the Sugar disease, others say it’s the rich man’s disease. Well you can call it anything you want but one name is recognized medically and it is Diabetes.

There are millions of people living with diabetes worldwide and this makes it a pretty important condition to talk about.

Now what is Diabetes?

Well, diabetes is a disease that causes a rise in the blood sugar level. (In simple terms)

Types of Diabetes

There are 3 types of Diabetes out there but let’s begin with Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes : This type of diabetes is also called the juvenile diabetes. With this type of diabetes, the organ in the body called pancreas whose job is to produce a hormone called insulin is unable to do so.  This insulin is the hormone that is supposed to control sugar in the blood. But because the pancreas is unable to produce it, the Sugar in the blood is piled up an causes high blood sugar level.

People living with Type 1 diabetes take insulin injections every day. It is because the body is deficient of insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is most often diagnosed in younger people.

There is no known preventable cause for type 1 diabetes.

Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • A constant feeling of hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Vision Changes
  • Fatigue

Type 2 Diabetes

This is the most common type. 8 out of 10 people living with diabetes have type 2.

Unlike the Type 1, type 2 diabetes is greatly caused by excess body weight and inactivity.

It takes longer for type 2 diabetes to be noticed without blood glucose monitoring.

A simple blood sugar testing can be used to identify diabetes or risk of diabetes  in a person.

Since it cannot be cured, diabetes can only be managed. You can do so by

  • Keeping your blood sugar under control
  • Monitoring your blood pressure
  • Maintaining good foot care
  • Periodic eye screening is needed to prevent vision loss
  • Blood lipid control

Diabetes cannot be cured but it can be managed for you to live a great life!

Tetanus does not prevent rabies

Management of dog bite has been done wrong in most health facilities in Ghana.

Victims of dog bite have been given only Tetanus injections in the hospitals and clinics by “health professionals ” qualified and unqualified as treatment of dog bite.

This wrong practice has led to the death of many Ghanaians who believed they had received the needed care because they had visited the hospital.

Tetanus does not prevent rabies after a bite from a rabid dog.

Anti-rabies prophylaxis for humans is what is given to prevent Rabies.

Health professionals need training on the management of dog bite to prevent patients from getting rabies.
